You’ll use your Secret Key the first time you sign in to 1Password on a new device. It works with your 1Password account password to encrypt and protect your data:
- Without it, no one can access your 1Password data – including you – so keep it safe.
- It’s stored on devices you’ve already used and in your Emergency Kit. Only you have access to it.

Important
Your Secret Key is not a backup code. It doesn’t let you sign in if you forget your 1Password account password. Learn what to do if you forget your account password.
Find your Secret Key in the 1Password apps
You can find your Secret Key in the 1Password app on any device where you’re already signed in to your account.

- Open and unlock 1Password 8 for Mac.
- Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Manage Accounts.
- If you’re signed in to multiple accounts, select your account.
- Select Your Details, then select the Secret Key field to copy it.
To view your Secret Key so you can enter it on another device, hover over it, select the down arrow , then select Reveal.

- Open and unlock 1Password 7 for Mac.
- Select 1Password 7 > Settings or Preferences.
- Select the Accounts icon, then select your account.
- Select your Secret Key to copy it. Or select Set up other devices to scan your Setup Code with a mobile device.

- Open and unlock 1Password 8 for iOS.
- Select the icon for your account or collection at the top left, then select Manage Accounts.
If you're using an iPad, select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar.
- If you’re signed in to multiple accounts, select your account.
- Select Your Details, then select the Secret Key field to copy it.
To view your Secret Key so you can enter it on another device, select the ellipsis , then select Reveal.

- Select your account, then select your Secret Key. Select Copy, or select Set Up Another Device to scan your Setup Code with a mobile device.
To view your Secret Key so you can enter it on another device, tap and hold on it, select , then select Reveal.

- Select the Account menu, choose your account, hover over its Secret Key, then select Copy.

If you're using a tablet, select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar.
- If you’re signed in to multiple accounts, select your account.

To view your Secret Key so you can enter it on another device, select it, then select Reveal.

- Open and unlock 1Password 7 for Android.
- Select Settings > Accounts.
- Select your account, then select your Secret Key. Select Copy, or select Set up another device to scan your Setup Code with a mobile device.
- Open and unlock 1Password for Linux.
- Select your account or collection at the top of the sidebar, then select Manage Accounts.
- If you’re signed in to multiple accounts, select your account.
- Select Your Details, then select the Secret Key field to copy it.
To view your Secret Key so you can enter it on another device, hover over it, select the down arrow , then select Reveal.
Find your Secret Key on 1Password.com
Important
You won’t be able to find your Secret Key in Safari unless you sign in to your 1Password account at least every 7 days. To make sure you can always access your account, download and set up the 1Password app, then download your Emergency Kit.
You can find your Secret Key in your 1Password account on the web. Use a browser you’ve used to sign in to your account before, like the browser you used to create your account.
- Sign in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com.
- Select your name in the top right > Manage account, then select Show in the Secret Key field.
Find your Secret Key in your Emergency Kit
You can find your Secret Key and Setup Code in your Emergency Kit, which may be saved on the device you used to create your 1Password account.
If you don’t remember saving your Emergency Kit, look in your Downloads folder for a PDF file named “1Password Emergency Kit”.
If you’re part of a team that uses 1Password Business, and you can’t find an Emergency Kit saved on your device, Emergency Kits may be turned off for your team. If you unlock 1Password with your identity provider, you won’t have an Emergency Kit.
Scan a QR code to sign in to the 1Password mobile app
If you need to set up the 1Password app on your mobile device, you can scan a QR code from any device that’s already signed in to your account.
To find your QR code:
- In 1Password 8 or later, select your account or collection from the top of the sidebar or screen, then select Set Up Another Device.
- On 1Password.com, select your name in the top right, then select Set up another device and select Show code.
After you’ve set up your mobile device, you can use the 1Password mobile app to scan QR codes and sign in to your account on other devices.

Your Secret Key is your secret. It protects your account together with your 1Password account password, which only you know. We don’t have a copy of your Secret Key or any way to recover or reset it for you. To find your Secret Key, you’ll need one of the following:
- The 1Password app on any device where you’re already signed in to your account.
- A browser you’ve used to sign in to your account before.
- Your Emergency Kit.
If you don’t have one of those, but you belong to a family or team account, ask a family organizer or team administrator to recover your account.
If you’ve lost access to a device, learn how to regenerate your Secret Key.
